Eavesdrop on great conversations with Bob Schmidt
Award-winning radio host Bob Schmidt is a radio industry veteran who has spent the past three decades of his life communicating with listeners. Bob entered the field, as many of his contemporaries did, as a disc jockey, spinning vinyl singles and albums. In the years since, radio station recording media evolved, shifting to digital forms, first on CDs and since then to storage and playback from computer hard drives. While Bob still enjoys sharing favorite musical tracks with listeners and friends, his interest in a wide variety of subjects prompted him to gravitate to talk radio. Bob’s programs revolve around his lively schedule of guests, which on any given day may include elected officials, entertainers, business owners, educators — people from all walks of life, with a wide range of expertise and experiences.
Bob has earned significant peer recognition. The Wisconsin Broadcasters Association presented him with an Award for Excellence for best interview, and also for best commentary or editorial. He additionally earned second-place honors for best news and talk interview program in a medium market.
Educate, entertain, inspire
“On my program, my intention is to educate, entertain, or inspire, and I select my guests accordingly. I have a love for knowledge, and I enjoy learning, along with my listeners, what our fascinating on-air guests have to say,” Bob explains. He values dependability, and in his life balances pragmatism with optimism. “I pride myself on being a knowledgeable, involved, dedicated, hardworking, self motivated person,” said Bob, who graduated from Brown institute in 1988 and Dale Carnegie leadership training in 2011, and will graduate from Western Technical College in 2018.
“My listeners know that when they tune in, they always have a chance to eavesdrop on great conversations,” Bob chuckles. But listeners don’t have to be passive. He always encourages listener participation.
On the air as well as away from the microphone, Bob has a fun demeanor that listeners find calming and relaxing. “Although I have opinions, I am anything but close-minded. I am always willing to consider new ideas, because that’s how we learn. I've had conversations with a president, numerous senators, several governors, lots of rock stars, and many other celebrities,” Bob said. “My favorite interviews, however, are those with business owners, entrepreneurs and authors.”
Bob lends his expertise off the air as well, in his communication consulting business. Bob also designs websites for clients, he is a talented voiceover actor and narrator, and he produces custom podcasts. Bob, who grew up in the Twin Cities, has lived since 1992 in the La Crosse area, where he and his wife raised their four kids. His personal interests include playing Texas Hold’em with his buddies, gardening, and he enjoys the outdoors surrounding his cabin retreat.
